Graphics and visual features

Farming Simulator was always known more for its accessibility – and not the dazzling visuals. But this year, the series is getting a serious facelift.

Here are some of the main features:

  • Full support of DirectX 12.
  • The new Giants Engine 9, which has a much more improved multi-threading optimization.
  • Temporal anti-aliasing – no more broken-looking or flickering objects, they should look and feel smooth.
  • Load times are reduced with texture streaming, which loads the textures only when they’re required, not all at once.
  • With occlusion culling, objects not visible in your camera view will not be rendered, massively increasing the game performance.

But by far the most exciting new feature is the Parallax Occlusion Mapping (POM).

Parallax Occlusion Mapping

Realism! We all love realism – and now, there’s going to be a lot more of it. Parallax Occlusion Mapping is a technique for shading and texturing.

Its main goal is simple: to create the most realistic-looking 3D illusion. Take a look at the example right here:

The POM boosts the surface of any texture, helping it to appear more three-dimensional. Prepare for more realistic soil, better-looking trees, and better overall environment graphics. All without the super demanding, and performance-crashing 3D geometry.

Gameplay changes

Many exciting gameplay features have only been available as third-party mod options. And while mods are going to remain FS22 as a very important part of the game, we’re happy to hear that some popular mods will be a part of the main release!

Now, your crops are for more than just selling – on FS22, you’ll be able to make them work for you.

  • You can turn wheat into flour at the flour mill.
  • You can also make products out of your flour, and even establish big supply lines, baking cakes, and bread.
  • Later, simply sell the finished products at a profit – you can use bakeries, supermarkets, or even farmer’s markets.

Audio changes

Real farming enthusiasts will know – a genuine sound is a massive farm of the whole experience. And while the previous Farming Simulator versions haven’t been bad (in fact, they’ve been good!), we are about to see some further improvements.

Engine audio, such as harvester and tractor audio, are all made much more realistic. Realistic gear shifting sounds, accurate engine reverberation, and even different sounds, depending on the carried load, makes this an even more improved audio experience.

Season changes

The super-popular Seasons mod made it possible to include seasonal cycles in the game. Now – this super exciting feature is a part of the base game.

The built-in Seasons function will behave differently from the mod – however, Giants Software did not share any further details with us. Keep your eyes peeled, we’ll update this as more information comes to light.

New crops added

As new Farming Simulator versions get released, we also get some new interesting crop options. This year is one of those years, and we’re getting a few extra options, such as:

  • Olives
  • Grapes
  • Sorghum

Just like with some other crops, you can either sell them raw or process and sell them as products.

Additional improvements

They may not be worthy of their very own big section – but these changes are still massively important to the new Farming Simulator 22 game.

AI improvements

What’s good about a “Helper”, if it’s just sitting there in the corner being blocked by nothing? Giants Software probably had the same thought, as numerous improvements to AI behavior are being reported as well. Finally.

New maps

FS22 will include an updated Erlengrat map (launched in FS19 as a part of the Alpine Farming DLC) – and there will also be two entirely new maps.

One of them is called Elmcreek, and it’s heavily inspired by the USA’s midwest region.

The other map is yet to be revealed – we’ll update you as we know more.

New animals

There’s also bound to be an update to the livestock available in the game. As of now, we know only of a new gray milk cow.

New vehicles

Farming Simulator is like a good wine, getting better and more complex as it ages.

But when it comes to vehicles, Farming Simulator 22 wants to kick it into high gear from the start. There will be:

  • Machinery from over 100 authentic brands
  • New machinery categories (none confirmed so far)
  • Customized number plates
  • Regional differences between vehicles

Character customization

You will be able to customize your farmer character a whole lot more – with different clothing options available.
